Izzy’s Words of the Day from Lockdown

This post on DoggyMom.com is a compilation of the photos/words that Izzy hosted on our Facebook page during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Positive Ageing

In the June edition of NZ Dog World, I asked my clients about what positive ageing means for dogs and there were several common themes...

Digitise your dog

Researchers at the University of Bath are honing the ability to film dogs in 3D without expensive multi-camera setups like those used in the movies. While it is tempting to make this technology into computer games, the application to dog rehabilitation and gait analysis are what intrigues me. I would love to have the technology adapted so I can use it in my practice.

Researchers find CBD improves arthritis symptoms in dogs

A research team at the Baylor College of Medicine have published results into a small study about the effects of CBD oil on arthritic dogs. The study showed that in dogs diagnosed with the condition, CBD treatment significantly improved quality of life as documented by both owner and veterinarian assessments. Please understand that, to date, neither NZ's MPI nor the US's FDA have approved any CBD oil products for use on dogs.

Yes, your dog wants to rescue you

Researchers at Arizona State University have published a study which indicates that dogs want to help - they just need to know how. The sounds of a distressed owner encouraged 84% of the test group to go about rescuing their owners who were 'trapped' in a box.

Beyond Izzy’s pram (managing dogs through to old age) Part 10 – Other veterinary care

In the last segment of my ageing dogs series, I discuss the other care options available through veterinarians. The field of regenerative medicine is offering new hope for chronic pain sufferers, for example.

Online Prescriptions

In the Autumn edition of Pet Life Magazine, I talk to Stefan Walther of MyVet.co.nz and Rebecca Penman of VetPost.co.nz about the rights of dog owners to ask for a prescription for their dog's medications. Buying your dog's medication online can be a less expensive option, but such services are best used when there is an ongoing need for medication and not when your dog's health condition is acute.

Collars risk causing neck injuries in dogs

In this post, I share research from the University of Trent Nottingham about the forces on your dog's neck when you walk them with the lead attached to a collar. A harness is a much safer option and better still when you train your dog to walk on lead.

Beyond Izzy’s pram (managing dogs through to old age) Part 9 – Medications

In Part 9 of my ageing dogs series, I discuss the use of medications. Medications for pain management are essential for many dogs with arthritis. But pain medications are only one type of medication that our older dogs may require.

In a Covid-19 world, an in-home service provides peace of mind

Your home is your castle; and it's also where you have the greatest control over hygiene and cleanliness. In this post, I explain why in-home pet care services are the way to go in the age of Covid-19.
